NFL Week 9 Preview 2026: Vikings vs Bills, Bengals vs Falcons in Madrid, Bucs vs Bears & Top 5 Games With Playoff Impact

Bengals Vs Falcons

The Bengals And The Falcons' two offenses enter their Week Nine collision from two polar opposite directions after their Week 8 Conclusion. Joe Burrow And The Bengals Shook Off Another Slow Start. They blanked, Zero Points, by the Titans in the first quarter in Week 8. In the first half against the Ravens in Week 7, the Bengals had the fifth-best offense in football in terms of EPA per Play in 2026, but the 12th-worst first-half offense over the past two weeks, Scoring Nearly 30 points in the second half. Against the Titans The Bengals Offense Erupted For 512 Net Yards, + 0.153 EPA Per Play, 462 Gross Passing Yards According To Pff The Best Passing Performance All Season and The Bengals Needed Yard To Put Away The Titans. I said in my recap that the Bengals exhausted 1/3 of their cap to keep the trio of Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins together, and They Went Nuclear To Prevent A Wild Upset. contrast, Compare The Bengals To The Falcons, Who Had Experienced a Offensive Renaissance With The Return Of Penix, Heading Into Week Nine third in the league in points per game since Week Three, Briefly Surpassing The Panthers As The Best team in the NFC South Before Week Nine. Under the inclement weather in Florida, the Falcons suffered the worst (or 2nd Worse) Offensive And Passing Performance Of The Season: -0.551 EPA Per Play, 33% Completion(8/24), 125 passing yards, 75 of which came on one play, four interceptions, and a 12.0 passer rating. Penix Only Slightly Overshadowed The History Baker Mayfield Made. Before The Falcons Offense Got Washed Out In The Rain Penix Had Emerge From His Knee Injury Into One Of The Best Quarterbacks In League Top Ten InExplosive Pass Play Rate, Touchdown Percentage, Yards per Attempt with a 9 To 1 Touchdown Interception Ratio Since Week Three. One Game Shouldn’t Create damning Report On Penix As A Franchise, But from Here On Out Atlanta’s and Coach kevin Stefanski Will Be More Aware Of The Weather.

How Do These Two Teams Match Up? The Reason The Bengals Needed Joe Burrow To Unleash The Full Length Of His Abilities Because The “Hit Or Miss” Defense spent Most Of the Matchup Against The Titans Missing, They Gave Up 305 Gross Passing Yards, Two Touchdowns, 104.7 passer Rating To Cam Ward as A Passer; Ward’s First career 300 yards Passing Game, he Added seven Rushing Attempts for a career-best 41 yards, A Career best 53.2% success rate all While Not Completing A Pass Of 20 Air Yards Or Better. Tony Pollard forced 117 rushing yards, four missed tackles, and 5.6 a carry to the Titans running back Tony Pollard. The Titans scored a season-high 36 Points, with +0.098 EPA Per Play Against The Bengals' defense. The Bengals have played from behind these past two weeks, sporting the highest pass rate in football in Weeks 8 and 9. Chase Brown hasn’t seen much action. The Bengals rank 10th Worst in rush EPA in Weeks 7 and 8. What say Stake? For the Falcons, every game should feel like a playoff game- something most of the players on the roster haven’t experienced- but their division remains wide open with Any Able. Unfortunately, every team in the division might rise and Take Over, leaving Little Room For Error And Long Losing Streaks Like The One Atlanta Will Face If They Drop This Game. The Bengals Look The Best They Looked Since Their Superbowl-AFC Championship Run From Earlier This Decade, I mean offensively, of course. In a Wide-open AFC, the Jags have seized the top position, but the Bengals have started to creep up from behind.

X Factor: Has anyone seen or heard from Bijan Robinson? He started the season igniting the offense the Falcons had during their early start, pacing the league in touches. While one expected him to sustain that level, Bijan has made little impact in the Falcons' past few contests: 33.3% Success Rate, -0.274 EPA Per Rush, and 4.2 Yards Per Rush since Week Six. The Falcons' offense needs to get Robinson running at his early-season pace: 5.7 Yards Per Rush, 50.0% Success Rate, 12.7% explosive Play Rate, and +0.092 EPA per rush. The Bengals' defense struggled to contain both Tony Pollard and Cam Ward on the ground; Bijan could control this game for the Falcons.

The Bengals' pass Defense Got Exposed Against The Titans, and Cincy Has Not Played Elite Pass Defense For Most Of The 7th, Worse In Passing Yards Allowed. The Bengals' corners, D.J. Turner, Daxton Gill, and Jordan Battle, will have their hands full with the Falcons' receiving threats: Drake London, Kyle Pitts, Jahan Dotson, and Robinson Out Of The Backfield.

Key Stat: The Bengals Rank 30th in defensive DVOA against tight ends, mostly because their linebackers struggle in coverage. Falcons Tight End Kyle Pitts had Ramped Up His Production In The Weeks Leading To The Week 9 Fall Off +0.607 epa Per Target, Three Touchdowns weeks six and Seven including +0.149 EPA Per Target against Nickel Coverage Which The Bengals Play nearly Exclusively.

Verdict: The Falcons Will Surely Play Better In Week Nine Than In Week Eight, But Will They String enough to knock off the Bengals? No, Cincy triumphs in another high-scoring affair, 40-33.

Patriots Vs Packers

Two Flame-Throwing Quarterbacks Face-Off at 5-3 Desperate To Keep Pace For The Top Of Their Division As Both Offenses Rely Heavily On Downfield Passes With Very Little Run Support. The Patriots fought through a longer-than-expected battle with the Dolphins in Week before walking away with the victory after trailing at the half. Drake Maye turned the downfield game into a 43 Yard connection To Reciver Kyle Williams in The Third Quarter and a 48 Yard Catch-and-run by Pop Douglas in the fourth quarter, with three touchdowns in the second Half To Help New England down Miami. These two plays filled the atmosphere with joy. They reminded the Patriots of the Offense They Hoped to Witness After a Listless Afternoon. Then You're Reminded That The Dolphins have the league’s worst passing defense, a team the Patriots should have cruised by on the scoreboard. Despite effective numbers, Drake Maye finished 16/20 for 199 Passing Yards. The Patriots again failed to capture last season's lightning in a bottle.

Injuries Have Played a Role in the Patriots' Slump: Wide Receivers AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs, along with guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, have all missed extended periods of time, including Week 8 against the Dolphins. The Patriots May Get Brown and/or receiver Mack Hollins Back For Their Matchup With Mr. Oppenheimer, Jordan Love. No other quarterback in football has used the deep ball more often or more effectively than Jordan Love, who leads the NFL with 21 completions of 25 or more yards in 2026, leads the NFL with 1,253 yards on downfield passes this season (10+ air yards), coming off a successful outing against the Panthers defense +0.59 EPA per dropback) on Thursday night, with two touchdowns and One Interception. However, Love Finished Just Two For Eight on serious attempts; on some drops, Matthew Golden caught one of five targets. The Patriots' pass defense had a couple of bad moments against the Dolphins, giving up two touchdowns: one to Kevin Coleman and another to Mike Washington. The Patriots' secondary will have to pay closer attention to the threat of Christian Watson and Matthew Golden streaking the defense. Golden Creates Separation Better Than Watson But Struggles To Generate Consistent Results. 39.8% of the Packers' downfield targets land in Golden's direction, with him generating a 39.0% catch rate.

What’s At Stake?

After the easy schedule bonanza last season, the Patriots have struggled early this Season Against Tougher Competition. The Patriots have two wins against teams in the playoff picture, but they've fallen short against two others and Got Stomped by the Jaguars. New England needs a definitive Quality Win With The Defense Returning to Early Season Form. The Packers have the worst record in their division at 5-3, with a few tough opponents, and they need to pick off a mid-tier New England To Keep Pace With the Rest Of The Division.

X-Factor: The Packers Offensive Has Improved In Recent Week But The Group Remains Weak Not Only In Pass Protection But In TheRun Where The Packers Still Rank Last. Jordan Love Has Gotten Rid Of The Ball Fast Even Down Field his 11.4% 14 of 123 pressure To Sack Rate Ranks fifth In Football. His Quick Release Absolves His Offensive Line; however, the Patriots play stickier coverage, and they rank 11th in pass-rush win rate and 6th in sack rate. Interior Rushers Christian Barmore and Milton Williams rank top ten in pass-rush win rate from the inside. The Packers' pass blocking might have to step up to give Love a fraction of a second more to get major gains downfield.

For The Patriots, Drake Maye. Yes, Drake Maye. He’s An Elite Quarterback. He’s turnover-prone. He stays clean against the Dolphins. I don’t Need To Say More. He’s got nine turnovers this season: eight interceptions. The Packers defense Has played Elite Football Without Micah Third In Forced Turnover Rate, fifth In EPA Per Drop back Allowed -0.052, second In Explosive Pass Pay Rate, Fifth In Pressure Rate and They Get Home Enough 12th In Sack Rate These Attribute Of The Packers Defense Will Create Problems For Drake In week Nine.

Key Stats: I Wanted To Choose Pop Douglas as the X-factor; his yardage after Catch Ability(4.7 YAC Per Reception) will be crucial against a Packers defense that has surrendered the fifth-most yards after the catch In Football (988).

The Packers' defense Handled The Explosive Play Of Bryce Young and the Panthers' Receiving Corps, but Drake Maye presents a different problem as a dual-threat, Full-Field Read Specialist. The Patriots Win In A Slugfest, 38-34.

Vikings vs Bills

No One Expected The Kyler Murray-led Vikings To Close The Season Undefeated, and this Stretch of games between Weeks 8- 12 would mark their first loss, but the loss could become a blessing as Minnesota prepares To Face The 6-1 Bills. The Vikings' defense suffered a few infractions in This Game. On Top Of The 17 Missed Tackles, the Lions targeted the Aged, Slower-Footed Safety Harrison Smith on Jameson Williams' game-winning corner-route touchdown; Smith got exposed. The Vikings finished with a 131.3 Passer Rating On Three Targets. The Vikings Defense Also Had A particular Problem handling Jahmyr Gibbs rushing off the left side, whether on design or cutback behind Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell. The Lions rushed directly at Andrew Van Ginkel and Harrison Smith, two porous run defenders, and Gibbs racked up 131 yards off the left side, including his explosive 30-yard cutback touchdown run in the third quarter. In A Game Where Kyler Murray posted two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, but the Offense Needed To create More Separation, and Winning Six Games On The Strength Of The Defense May Have Made Kevin O’Connell complacent, satisfied with getting just enough points and trusting the defense to get the win at home. With That Style Of Play, Kyler Murray Cant Afford To Turn The Ball Over. The Vikings' defense needed to hit on those crucial plays to stop those Lions touchdowns, but they missed. The Vikings Will Face A running back with A Similar Skill Set To Jahmyr Gibbs in Reigning rushing Champ James Cook. He’s No Gibbs, More Of A Gibbs Lite. He’s Not The Same Level of Player. Gibbs Looks More Like A Gibbs Lite In Weight Class and play. They’re both explosive, but Gibbs forces more missed tackles and creates more yards after contact, thanks to a 15 Pound Difference between the two running backs. James Cook runs more up the gut of the offense, not to the boundary, not to mention the Bills don’t employ Penei Sewell or another like him, which could expose the Vikings' left-end vulnerability. Fortunately for Buffalo, Josh Allen Runs Left, right, and Everywhere Else; he’s Next To Face The Gauntlet of the Vikings' blitz.

Allen struggled in the first half of Week 8: -0.420 EPA per dropback, 42.1% completion percentage, before closing the game strong: +0.690 EPA per dropback, 81.3% Completion Percentage The Rest Of The Way. He’s struggled In The First Half Of His Past Three Games: weeks 6- 8: -0.080 EPA Per Dropback, 41.0% Success Rate, 57.1% Completion Percentage. A slow start won’t doom the Bills in this contest because Kyler Murray Won’t Sustain Drives. What’s at stake? Despite fierce Battles, Flaws, and Injuries, the NFC North remains the Strongest Division in Sports and Football. An undefeated season could turn into a three-loss season overnight. The Vikings Couldn’t Take Advantage Of The Lions' Defense, so I don’t expect Kyler and KOC to Take Off Against The Bills, But The Vikings have to respond to Their Loss to the Lions to reestablish their boogeyman status. The Bills Control Their Fate In The AFC, but the Broncos and Jags Continue To surge, both of whom play moribund teams this week.

X-Factor: Kyler Murray, The X-Factor For The Vikings Against The Blitz. He finished 17/29 Against The Lions for 210 Passing Yards, +2.0% Completion Percentage Over Expected. He’s 10th-best in explosive throw rate in football; he's weak in the nuanced and simple areas of quarterback play, but he needs to get more explosiveness. Teams score 65% of the drives that register an Explosive Play. The Bills have the fifth-worst explosive-play rate defense in football; Kyler and the Vikings Have The Advantage.

Not exactly A X Factor Because Their Good But The Buffalo’s Pass Protection Have Their Hands Full, The Vikings Continued To Storm The Pocket Against The Lions 18 Blitzes, 85% Of Jared Goof’s Drop backs. Goff completed 17 Passes Against The Blitzes With One Touchdown and one pick. The Vikings Only Pressured him 9 times, resulting in four sacks. No Matter How Dangerous The Vikings Will Blitz Josh Allen, the Bills' offensive line, ranked third in pass-block win rate, will face a unique challenge.

Key Stat: Josh Allen is fifth in the league in yards per attempt against the Blitz.

Verdict: A frustrated Justin Jefferson star; Vikings Receivers Steps Into Week Nine to make a statement, and he goes nuclear: 120 Plus receiving Yards. The Vikings' offense gets the explosive and brings down the Bills in A Close One, 24-20.

Tampa Bay Vs Chicago

When the Bucs signed Baker Mayfield To A New $165 Million Deal, Everyone Expected the Bucs' Offense To Lean More On Mayfield’s Arm. I Mean, He Got “M-V-P” Chants Last Season. After struggling To Win Games To Start The Season, Baker’s injury, and now struggling to complete passes, the Bucs Have Turned Up The Run Game. Tampa has registered two back-to-back 300 Yard Rushing Games, Two Straight Victories Powered by Newly Reestablished Star Back Bucky Irving. The Tampa offense registered two 140-yard-or-more rushing games against the Falcons In The Rain In Tampa To Get The Bucs Back into The Playoff Race. But even Tampa Bay's run game has been overshadowed in recent weeks; Tampa Has Threatened The Seahawks and the Vikings for the No. 1 spot—currently No. 1, according to ESPN FPI efficiency. The Bucs Defense embarrassed Atlanta: -0.87 EPA per dropback For Micheal Penix Jr., without the weather on their side, against Caleb Williams And The Bears offense, fresh off handling the Seahawks defense: 34 Points, 369 Total Offense( A Little lil Jon and The East Side Boyz “Get Low”), +0.158 EPA per play.

Caleb moved around, kept plays alive, and threw 3.1 times per play while hunting big plays, including six explosive plays. He completed multiple passes downfield on the move, including the first touchdown on his way to 24/34 247 passing Yards. Williams Has Four Touchdowns and 0 Picks Since His Return, with 860 passing yards, the most since Week Six. Can Williams Crack Tampa’s Strong Pass Defense? He might have to face them alone. The Bears' run game tallied three touchdowns, eight first downs, but averaged only 2.6 Yards Per Carry. The Bears Defense Ranked 7th According To FPI returned the favor, holding Seattle’s Run Game To -0.12 per Run Play, but 4.3 Per Rush. Tampa still has a void to exploit, although the presence of newly acquired Bears Defensive Tackle Jeffrey Simmons Will Prove A Daunting task. The Bears have the worst run defense in football, according to PFF. Hopefully, Week 8 represented a Shift In A New Direction. The Bears Really Shut Down Sam Darnold, 17/34 for 188 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one pick, as Baker Mayfield came in on a historic low, really an Afterthought.

What’s At Stake?

The Bucs Hold A 41% Chance Of Winning The NFC, and while those odds improve with a Win, Tampa entered this season with a vision as an NFC contender in 2026. Simply Winning The Second Weakest Division In Football Won’t Suffice, The Bucs Need To Prove That Their New Rushing Attack Put Them In The Same Caliber As The Bears, Seahawks, Lions and Not A NFC Little Brother. The Bears face the inverted problem: Chicago needs to Push Itself into The Upper Echelon Of NFC powerhouses like the Niners, Potentially The Rams and Vikings, and not get stuck in the middle of the division. The Bears Also Have a New Opening to catch the Vikings, win the division, and take the number one seed into the playoffs.

X-Factor: The Bears Defense Posted A Great Game against the Seahawks, But They Had a Jaxon Smith-Njigba problem: 6 Catches, All First Downs, 118 receiving yards, With One Touchdown. The Bears' corners, Tyrique Stevenson and Jaylon Johnson, have not played strong ball this season: 135.5 Passer Rating And 119.6 passer rating when targeted, respectively. If the Bears commit to Loading The Box Against Tampa’s Run Game, lining up their safeties at linebacker for Run fit or sending safety blitzes (Chicago blitzed at the eighth-highest rate), their corners will find themselves one-on-one on the outside. The Bears play man coverage on 33.1% of opponent dropbacks this season, the fourth-highest rate in football. The Bucs Don’t have a JSN-level receiver, but they'll get lead receiver Emeka Egbuka back, who could get open downfield against these Bears.

For the Bucs, Baker Mayfield is the C-factor for the rest of the Season. Even with Tampa’s newfound rushing success, Mayfield and the dropback game Will Want To Make An Imprint On The Game and Not Just Run Cardio— The Passing Offense Has Incentives In Their Contract Too—Mayfield Can’t Try To Pass His Way Into a Rhythm. Weeks 1-3 The Bucs Dropback Rate Ranked Second In Football 68.5%, Now They Rush The Ball More Than Any Team and Mayfield Needs To Acclimate To This New Style Of Offense. He’s Not The Play Caller But The Play Conductor, and He’ll need To Exercise Restraint On Himself and not Allow His Arm To Betray Him.

Key Stat: The Battle of Ball Control. The Bears lead the League With +10:53 time of Possession On Average, 11 minutes more time with the ball than the next team. No One Plays the ball-control game better than the Bears This Season. Tampa Bay has Called Run Plays 85.8% in their last two games, Controlling the clock effectively; for Their Side, the Bucs Rank third in time of possession over the past Two Weeks, Just Ahead of the Bears.

Outcome: I Think The Bucs' defense and Run Game Prove Too Much For Chicago, as the Bucs showcase that their newfound power on the ground can be the power in the NFC.

Broncos Vs Panthers

Just A Few weeks ago, the Panthers Were The Hot Choice In The NFC. Maybe Not Number One Seed Level but Critics Raved About The Stride Bryce Young Made His Game, The Panthers Explosive Offense Embarrassed the Lions On National Television Announcing The Arrival Of A New Era Of Panthers Football. Through The First Three Weeks of the season, the Panthers averaged 6.2 Yards Per Play, First In Total Passing Yards and Seventh In Explosive Play Rate. Bryce young Had Earned All The “Proved Them Wrong” Acclaim Through weeks 1-4 He’s Leading The League In Passing 1268 Passing Yards, Sixth In EPA Per DropBacks, 8th In Touchdown percentage With The sixth Best Interception Rate. The Panthers' Offensive Success rate (41.6%) and Conversion Rate (34.1%) mean the team gained the necessary yards on a down. She Converted To A New Set Of downs, suggesting the offense plays an unsustainable style heavily reliant on splash plays. Minnesota generated a better conversion rate in Weeks 1-3. Since Week Five, the Panthers Have One of the Worst offenses in Football: 4.9 A Play, 17.7 Points per Game, -0.117 EPA Per Play, and a 6.1% Explosive Play Rate. The Last Time We Witnessed The Panthers on Thursday night, they struggled to get anything going against the Packers: just one deep pass play. The Packers ' defensive line had Young cornered on several dropbacks.

Bryce faced 27 Pressures and Took Six sacks, finishing With Just A 68.1 Passer Rating. The Broncos defense has produced the most pressures this Seasonn, with the fourth-most sacks. That Same Defense Gave Up 321 Passing Yards to Patrick Mahomes, 30/40, Three Touchdowns, a 123.0 Passer rating, and +0.30 EPA per pass play. Pressured him 18 Times. The Broncos have allowed the second-most passing yards in football since Week Six, but they’ve won in high-leverage circumstances: -0.001 EPA per dropback, including denying Patrick Mahomes a game-winning drive in Week Eight. The Broncos Have Won Four Straight Games despite Inconsistent Play On Both SIDes Of The Ball Most Of The Season. Bo Nix: call him Mr. Clutch or don't, but he delivered in the fourth quarter again: +1.272 EPA per dropback, 71.4% Success Rate, 155 Passing Yards, 12/19, 12.0 yards per attempt, to lift the Broncos To A Comeback Win. Bo Nix Leads The League In Fourth-Quarter Game-Winning Drives Since He Entered The League, But That One Meant More Over Mahomes as The Broncos Redeemed The Opening Week Loss To The Chiefs.

What’s at Stake? The Broncos took over the top spot in the AFC West, but this Team Lives On The Edge And Thrived On Mediocre competition up to this point in the season. Unlike the Jags, the Broncos don’t have total control over their division, so they can’t afford to drop games to “Mediocre” Teams Like The Panthers. The Panthers Need To get Back On Track, get the offense pushing the ball downfield, and find more consistent ways To Win On a down-to-down basis. Tampa Bay’s Resurgence Has Pushed The Panthers Back to the Back Line in the Division, but a Win Over The Broncos Will Go a Long Way to Reestablish Confidence in Carolina.

X-Factor: The Panthers' Defense Has Gotten Embarrassed in recent weeks, with Tampa running all over them and Jordan Love dropping explosives. The Panthers need Someone To step up, and I like Devin Lloyd, whom the Panthers paid good money for in free agency. He’s a Good Pass Rusher, but He Needs To Plug In More In The Run Game To Save The Panthers from Another Defensive Embarrassment. The Panthers Allow 140 Rushing Yards Per Game—the X-Factor For The Broncos: The Offensive Run Game With JK Dobbins and Co. The Broncos rank in the bottom third in most relevant rushing categories and face one of the weakest rushing defenses in football. Can they take over this matchup against the Panthers and deliver a no-contest victory for Denver?

Key Stats: Since Week Six Bryce Young Has seen The Fourth Highest Rate Of Two High Defensive Coverage Aa Defenses Intend To slow Down His Deep Passes and The Strategy Has Work Young Has Posted A -0.293 EPA Per Drop back On Such Coverage. The Broncos Haven’t Played Much Two-High This Season, and they give up +0.075 EPA per dropback in that coverage.

Verdict: I Think the Panthers Bounce Back as The Broncos Come Down After an Emotional Victory Over The Chiefs. Carolina Defeats The Broncos 27-15.
